High Hoppers Summer Camp
Are you looking for care for your Hopkins student this summer? The Hopkins Elementary School Age Child Care Program is your answer! The High Hoppers Program is now accepting registrations for High Hoppers Camp which is held from June- August. Our Camp provides participants with an opportunity to make friends, try new things and most of all have fun! We maintain low child to staff ratios while providing a safe and friendly environment. Camp is available Monday-Friday from 6:30 am – 6:00 pm. Children will enjoy a variety of activities each week focused around a fun and adventurous theme. Arts and crafts, games, teambuilding, and more will be a part of each day. Field trips such as swimming, hiking, and museum tours are included. Children ages 5-12 are eligible to attend. Children 5 years old must have completed kindergarten in spring 2008. The High Hoppers Camp is a state-licensed program and CCCAP approved. For more information please contact the SACC Manager, Jenny Heirshberg at 303-347-4555. Sign up today – spaces are limited!
Severe Weather
Springtime always brings a change in the weather and storms can move in quickly along the front range. Please spend a few minutes and review the simple safety precautions for severe weather with your children.
Thunderstorms/Lightning at Dismissal Time
When lightning has been spotted within 6 miles of the school at dismissal time, the following procedures will be used:
1. All students will stay in classroom.
2. Bus students will report to the gym.
3. Severe Weather signs will be placed outside.
4. Parents can pick up students from the classrooms.
5. Students will be escorted to the busses when there is not a threat of lightning.
6. Students who walk will be dismissed after the threat is gone.
30/30 rule
1. Stay inside until lightning is 30 seconds away or hasn’t struck in 30 minutes
2. If you see lightning and hear the thunder within 30 seconds, you should be inside.
a. Sound travels one mile every 5 seconds
b. Count from the time you see the lightning until you hear the thunder.
c. 30 seconds gives you a 6 mile buffer
d. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a thunderstorm.
Outside precautions
1. Do not stand under trees or metal towers
2. When in wooded areas, look for low places with small trees
3. Out in the open; go to a low place like a valley, ditch, or ravine
4. Get off of hills; don’t stand in an open field where you are the tallest object
5. Get away from water, metal equipment, i.e. bikes
6. Stay away from metal fencing, pipes anything metal which could conduct electricity
Do not lie flat on the ground, instead, squat down in a crouch position with your feet being the only contact to the ground.
