UPCOMING EVENT!

Colorado Children’s
Book Award
Voting
Begins February 18th

The Colorado Children’s Book Award (CCBA) is an award given to one chapter book and one picture book each year. Award winners are selected by school children in Colorado. Last year’s winners were Bad Dog Marley and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Other past winners include: Skippy Jon Jones; A Dog’s Life; Eragon, and Captain Underpants.

This year, for the first time, Hopkins students will be voting for their favorite picture book and chapter book from the list of nominations. Each student will get a check list of eligible books. They must have read or heard at least 3 books from the list in order to be able to vote. We hope that everyone will read as many of the books as they can. A lot of the nominations are very popular books that have been around for months or even a year. Because of that, it’s very possible that students read some of these books a while ago. We’re asking that students have a parent or teacher sign off on the books they’ve read.

Voting will be held during library classes starting on February 18th and ending on February 25th. Student checklists must be completed before their class votes.  Click here  for a student checklist.

We hope every Hopkins student will be able to help choose the most popular children’s books in Colorado.

Student Author Project

What do Library Mouse, Christopher Paolini and Candace Fleming have in common? THEY WRITE BOOKS! This year in the spirit of Library Mouse and other favorite authors, we are inviting students to write their own books, articles, short stories, instruction guides, etc. and have them displayed in the library where other people can read them.

The work will be displayed in the library during the school year and then will be sent home. Student work will not be checked out. Depending on the number of student books turned in, work will be rotated through the display.

  •  Each classroom teacher will review the student’s writing to decide if it’s ready or needs more work.
  • Writing can be done at home and at school.
  • Students may collaborate with other students or adults on writing or illustrations.
  • Stories and illustrations must be original.
  • They must be typed or handwritten in an easy to read format.
  • Fiction and non-fiction are welcome.
